The Seven Photographs that changed Fashion

John Rankin Waddell  ( born in 1966) in Paisley , grow up in St Albans, Hertfordshire, also known under his working name Rankin, is portrait and fashion photographer.
In January 2009 BBC 4 broadcast his 1 hour documentary The Seven Photographs the Changed Fashion, in which he recreated the iconic images of  by Cecil Beaton, Erwin Blumenfeld, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, David Bailey, Guy Bourdin.

He interviewed of the original images   photographers, models and assistants to recreated  it iconic images. He used contemporary models including Heidi Klum, Erin O'Connor, Jade Parfitt, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, his wife Tuuli Shipster, Molli Gondi, Daphne Guinness  and David Gandy.

First  images taken by Cecil Beaton 1934
Hat Box

As a model Rankin choose a Sophie Ellis-Bextor, he believed that she has a similar look of Elsa Schiaparelli ,As a original shoot was taken, the technology of the time, wasn't the same as is today. From out of 10 he utilized 8 cameras,
which shows the photographer an upside down image. Definitely that was very difficult says Rankin to take a picture, then using a digital camera.

Second iconic image by Erwin Blumenfeld

Voque cover in 1950, to recreate this picture Rankin was using a Heidi Klum as amodel for her uncanny resemblance to original model. The shoot was quite easy and simple to take it, Rankin use Heidi's personality and cheeky character to gave a image modern look.

Third iconic image by Richard Avendon 1955
Dovima with Elephants

For this particular image he used Erin O'Connor as model. Richard Avendon known as a first celebrity fashion photographer ; he grew in the golden age of fashion photography, we can see the evidence  onto this image.
Rankin's interpretation of this particular look  says; spectacle drama and new modern of thinking.

Forth iconic image  by David Bailey 1963
John Shrimpton

This beautiful image  Rankin recreated using own wife Tuuli Shipster. I loved this look, her sexy pose, unimpeachable look, give a picture freshness and a sensual experience.

Fifth iconic image by Helmut Newton 1975
Rue Aubriot Voque

For this image I am speechless- I love a charisma of Paris, nostalgic feeling and sensual inspiration of the Paris night.
I think Rankin did beautiful job about this picture, recreated as a realistic image from 1975.

Sixth iconic image by Herb Ritts 1984
Fred with Tyres

Such a different contrast from romantic scenery of Paris to scrap yard in London, but I think Rankin did beautiful job recreated this picture in modern way of looking.

Seventh iconic image by Guy Bourdin 1970
Untitled
Well that image works for me less  as a rest of recreated of images, maybe because of the model Daphne Guinness, each of a models have a charisma, but I am not sure about Daphne. Using of different facilities like red pantyhose, leather belt and black shoes really resemble this original image give it a raunchy looks.

To summarise I think Rankin had a considerable challenge to reproduce these iconic images, to get this right and really shows a respect for the original photographers, and I think he did amazing job.

Introduction to Drawing

Drawing is one of the oldest forms of human expression, with evidence for its existence preceding that of written communication.
The sketches and paintings produced in prehistoric  times were eventually stylised and simplified, leading to the development of the written language  as we know it today.Drawing is used to express one's creativity, and therefore has been prominent in the world of art. Throughout much of history, drawing was regarded as the foundation for artistic practise. Initially, artists used and re-used wooden tablets for the production of their drawings. Following the widespread availability of paper in the 14th century, the use drawing in the arts increased. At this point, drawing was commonly used as a tool for thought and investigation, acting as a study medium whilst artists were preparing for their final pieces of work. Before the widespread availability of paper, 12th century monks in European monasteries used intricate drawings to prepare illustrated, illuminated manuscripts on vellum and parchment.
Each century has produced artists who have created great drawings.

  • Notable drafts men of the 14, 15 and 16 nth Century; Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Durer Michelangelo,Raphael

The basic tools are a drawing board or table, pencil sharpener and eraser, and for ink drawing, blotting paper. Other tools used are circle compass, ruler, and set square. Fixative used to prevent pencil and crayon marks from smudging.
Almost all drafts men use their hands and fingers to apply the media, with the exception of some handicapped individuals who draw with their mouth or feet.
Raphael, study for what became the Alba Madonna, with other sketches

Shading is the technique of varying the tonal values on the paper to represent the shade of the material as well as the placement of the shadows. Careful attention to reflected light, shadows and highlights can result in a very realistic rendition of the image.

Eyes & Lips

Perfect eyes and lip shape

I already put foundation and finish with translucent powder especially about eye area, after that I put light colour as a base, dark shadow to on the end to shape your eye.

Put a lot of translucent powder under eye to avoid mess, people wearing a contact lenses put a tissue under eye. I used a blending soft brush to define soak it line.

Lips
Never put the lipstick straight onto the lip, always use a hand or lip box to mix few colour I achieved perfect colour, before you put lipstick, use a cream to moisturise a lips, use an angled brush or pencil lip brush , making move from backwards to forward

Products which I used

Evaluation
Well, it is not easy to shape your eye and definitely very hard shape your lips, definitely I need it more practise especially eye with different eye shape.

Contemporary Elizabethan

I have chosen this portrait because it show a beautiful rich velvet dress, symbolise for me her personality and character."The  Ermine portrait of Elizabeth I" 1585 painted by Nicholas Hilliard. On this portrait Elizabeth age of 52 , in the middle of her reign shows her composure and internal warmth and also her whole beauty.

Cara Delevingne black lace dress Cannes 2013 Red Carpet

I have chosen Cara Delavingne for my contemporary portrait because she is  famous and beautiful young British model. Her stunning, sexy, lace dress emphasizes her beauty and sultry look. I love that make-up what she's wearing, she's look so perfect and brilliantly on red carpet look.

Between those portraits I can see a similarities; both of them look always perfect, they are chosen dresses which define theirs personality, character and charisma.
If I had a chance to change something in Elizabeth I portrait, definitely the background, I see her on a beautiful nature between trees and on the meadow, shows her natural beauty and fragility and also the strength and power.

Cara's look really reflecting the firmness and strength of Elizabeth I.

Base Foundation

Base Foundation

There is a 4 types of base;

  • Grease
  • Liquid
  • Powder
  • Tinted moisturiser
Remember!

use  GREASE on GREASE
POWDER on POWDER

Before apply a foundation, prepare your skin using a cleanser, toner & moisturiser.

  1. Colour match with the face and neck
  2. Usually mix two colour to a perfect match adding a primer
  3. I prefer start of the centre of forehead, remember cover an eyers and back of the neck if is necessary
  4. The concealer must be a two shades lighter then foundation to perfect cover a red patches, dark circles, some spots, add some original base and blend with brush, some people prefer use a fingers to perfect blend with the skin
  5. After use a big kabuki brush and buff into skin
  6. Apply translucent powder for perfect finished

Before
 After

I did some perfect matching with the skin, just I need it more practise cover some red spot, dark circles , using a concealer and blending into the skin.

Contouring & Highlighting

  • Before I started contouring I already applied a foundation base and concealer, I did not put a powder
  • Thin the nose by contouring  the sides of the bridge
  • Add a shadow using two shades darker along the underside of the cheekbones
  • Along the jaw line
  • Along the hairline to shorten the forehead
  • Add blush or bronzer between the highlight and contour shades
  • Use your  fingers to perfect blend it, make sure not streaky
Before                                          After

This type of contouring was more natural, that is mine you can wear every day, I think I did good job, of course I still need it work it out, to perfect blended

4 types face shapes; how to properly contour and highlight

Apply blush under cheekbones.
Contour along jaw, temples, and under chin and jawline (along neck).
Highlight bridge of nose, apples of cheeks and top of forehead, at hairline.
